I Wish I Could Play The Guitar!

My mother was a hairdresser, and one day after work, she brought home a crusty ol’ guitar with 5 strings and gave it to me. One of her clients got a haircut and didn’t quite have enough cash to pay the tab, so he offered her a guitar for her son in his early teens. I thought it was awesome!

A well-used 6-string guitar, with only 5 strings. I can play this! So, I learned a few chords from “Guitar Chords for Beginners”, and I was on my way. I eventually added the 6th string. Every time I comb through pictures of my life since then, I see images of me, playing the guitar.  Acoustic, electric, and other stringed instruments, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, and even a lap steel guitar.

Why after all these years can’t I play the guitar or any of those other musical pieces? Stuck in a rut? Not taking time to practice? Just willing to settle for the same songs I learned years ago? All of the above. I know I’m capable of learning more moves on my guitar, although I’m doubtful if I’ll ever be a shredder. I need to sit down…and play.

I don’t know who said this, but “if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got”. Also, “it’s just as easy TO DO, than NOT TO DO”.

I think I’ll start playing the guitar and trying to learn some new things.  Perhaps next time, I’ll be able to write “I Wish I Could Play The Guitar (Better)”.  -Jon Carter
