Goodbye, Professor Snape…

Goodbye, Professor Snape… Alan Rickman was truly the epitome of the British Gentleman, and he passed away Wednesday, January 13th (like David Bowie) at the age of 69 from cancer.

We had the honor of interviewing Alan twice, and he was unfailingly polite, humble and utterly charming. The first time was at the Sundance Film Festival, and I teased him that everyone was kind of hoping he’d take his shirt off as the evil (yet sexy) Sheriff Nottingham in “Robin Hood” (“And call off Christmas!”) The man actually ducked his head and blushed, stammering “well, really, you know, I, uh…” So charming! I know everyone loved him as Professor Snape in “Harry Potter,” but all my favorite movies seemed to have Alan in the cast, like “Galaxy Quest,” “Bottle Shock,” “Sense and Sensibility” and “Love Actually.”

His immortal quote seems even more heartfelt now: “When I’m 80 years old, sitting in my rocking chair, I’ll be reading Harry Potter. And my family will say to me, ‘Really?’ and I’ll say ‘Always.'”

Some of my favorite Alan Rickman moments:

“And call off Christmas!” Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves

“Cleah-ly, Fame. Isn’t. Everything.” Harry Potter

“By Grabthar’s Hammer, you SHALL be AVENGED!” Galaxy Quest
