Where’s Luke Skywalker? Here’s Why You Didn’t See Him In The New “Star Wars” Trailer. For the truly severe “Star Wars” nerds like me, the absence of Luke Skywalker from any of the teasers and the first full trailer for the new JJ Abrams film raised some serious concerns. C’mon! The man defeated his dad Darth Vader in combat and saved the Universe!
So, you have to wonder what’s up. Director JJ Abrams demurely says that the missing Skywalker is no accident. “These are good questions,” Abrams said when pressed about it. “I can’t wait for you to find out the answer.” Jerk.
The theory is that Kylo Ren, the new “totally not a Sith” bad guy with the cross-guard lightsaber, is actually Skywalker, who’s now fighting for the Dark Side. Think back to Yoda’s warning in “The Empire Strikes Back” where he said “Only a fully trained Jedi Knight, with the Force as his ally, will conquer Vader and his emperor. If you end your training now…if you choose the quick and easy path as Vader did…you will become an agent of evil.” And what does Luke do? Flies off.
The other major theory is that Luke’s in hiding – with conspiracy theorists pointing to the gloved hand reaching out to R2D2. I hate the idea that Luke Skywalker – the moral center of the first trilogy – would end up caving into the bad guy. Luke as Kylo Ren would kill me. What about you? Will it ruin the new trilogy for you if Luke has gone to the Dark Side?
